Measure Your Space

A new piece should fit through your door before it fits your room. Take ten minutes to measure before you order. It's the easiest way to avoid a return.

What you'll need

  • A tape measure (and a helper, if you can).
  • The product's dimensions. You'll find width, depth, and height in inches on each product page.
  • Painter's tape or newspaper, to mark the footprint on the floor.

1. Measure the room

  • Measure the length and width of the space, and note windows, doors, radiators, vents, and outlets.
  • Mark the piece's footprint on the floor with painter's tape. Walk around it and open nearby doors and drawers to see how it feels.
  • Leave room to move. Most people are comfortable with about 30 to 36 inches for walkways.
  • Living room: about 14 to 18 inches between a sofa and its coffee table.
  • Dining room: about 36 inches between the table edge and the wall, so chairs can slide out.
  • Bedroom: a nightstand close to the height of your mattress top is easiest to use.
  • Home office: leave about 36 inches behind your desk for the chair.

2. Measure the way in

We deliver to your door (main entrance, ground level), or to the curb for larger freight. You'll carry the piece from there, so check the whole route to the room:

  • Doorways: width and height at the narrowest point, with the door fully open. Hinges, handles, and trim count.
  • Hallways: width, ceiling height, and any tight corners or turns.
  • Stairs: width, ceiling clearance, landings, and handrails.
  • Elevators: door width and height, plus interior width, depth, and height.

3. Compare

  • Large pieces usually go through a doorway on their side. As a rule of thumb, the piece's depth (or height) should be smaller than your door's width, with at least an inch to spare.
  • For sofas and large cabinets, also check the turns: a long piece needs more space to get around a corner than to go straight through.
  • Check the product page to see whether the piece arrives assembled or in a box that needs assembly. Boxed pieces are often easier to bring inside.

Outdoor furniture

  • Measure your patio, deck, or balcony, and leave about 36 inches around a dining table for chairs.
  • Check gates, side paths, and any steps between the curb and where the furniture will go.
  • Think about where you'll store cushions and covers.
